Etymology:

Genus- Ambloplites= blunt armature (Greek).
Species- rupestris= living between rocks (Greek).

Intro:

The Rock Bass is member of the Centrachidae that is found throughout the USA and Canada. This fish is gold in color and has a red eye.

Habitat:

Rock Bass are usually found by weeds or structure underwater in rather shallow areas. This fish occurs in creeks, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.

Spawning:

Rock Bass spawn in spring. The males dig and defend a nest in shallow water.

Diet:

Rock Bass eat small fish, eggs, fry, insects, and insect larvae.

Size:

Rock Bass are usually 8-12 inches in length and about 1 pound. This fish can get 16-18 inches in ideal habitats, and weight 2-2.5 pounds. The ones in Canada grow much larger than the ones in the USA. The USA record for this fish is 3 lbs.

Keeping In Aquaria:

The Rock Bass is not very easy to keep in aquaria from what I've heard. This fish seems to be shy, and not adjust to tanks well.

Gaming Qualities:

This fish is fun to catch, especially on ultra light. For a sunfish, it puts up a great fight.

Fishing Tips:

I use light rods when fishing for Rock Bass. My two favorite baits for them are twister tails and plastic worms.
